Clergymen, Mother Rhoda, our hero!

CORRECTION MOTHER RHODA RECEIVED INJURIES BUT NO BROKEN BONES NEWS AS OF: 7/15/2012

Our Hero: Mother Rhoda,
(The Reverend Rhoda Treherne-Thomas, M.Div. Priest Associate)

Firstly, I want you to know that she is a warm, erudite, cheerful and dedicated Theologian. She is one who seeks to nurture, encourage and edify all those around her. She is a delightful teacher, role model and mentor. Further, I'm sure that you've been lucky if you've heard one of her sermons, had a pastoral visit with her, or encountered her in the community.

For a senior, five feet tall and about 100 lbs, she is huge in her impetus, fervor and delivery. We count ourselves lucky for her to be part of our church and the community. Most recently, in the line of duty, Mother Rhoda, as usual, with little regard for her personal safety, braving the elements, old age and going where ever her ministry takes her was mugged and suffered.
This is an attempt to thank her, in whatever small way, for her example and heart-felt sense of duty.

I believe that in the least, she should be acknowledged as a self-less messenger of “The Good News,” not just by our church, but by all.

God Speed your recovery, Mother Rhoda!

A WORD ON CAMPAIGNE FINANCE REFORM

In fairness to all who aspire to elected office, let no one be disadvantaged by finances, instead let he/she be disadvantaged by their issues, ideas and basic philosophy.
Let those who best understand American Values win!

HOW? Remember FDR rode into city by city, making his platform and rhetoric known? He pulled up on the train route, made his speeches and went onto the next town. The key item in an election is exposure.

Well,ok, but today we have media and a lot of money invested in each candidate. So? How do we level the playing field, make everyone running for office (be) heard, and how do we make sure it is fair to each candidate, their constituents and society as whole?

Campaigne Finance Reform:

Cooperation is needed from all involved; the candidate, the constituents and media.

What? Make no further personal campaigne finance contributions. Instead, initially as the race begins, make all contributions equally shared by all who are running for office. At the end you would make the bulk of money go back to the winning party-candidate. Make no mistake, each candidate will be heard, the general party platform will be be established for the coming election, and no one will lose because he/she could not finance their campaigne.

Instead of a candidate running for office, it should be that he/she best represents the party, the people and country.

HOW? All donations are to pay for air time/media/press for all candidates; until such time as the party candidate is chosen.

At that end of the campaigne cycle we will have heard from everyone, we will have made our decision, and we will have a party-candidate we totally support.

For example: the democratic party would fund all ads for the party;the candidates will get equal time providing a few loose ends are eliminated.

How then will begin traveling town to town is: Everyone will be heard! Point two: the approach to any election should be based on party-variables.

Town to Town debates can take place and be distributed worldwide candidate by candidate. The entire approach toward elected office would be: A narrowing down of our idea of a candidate for elected office. Our basic value system will be established.

Debates can naturally take place and take on a process of elimination; in other words: Each candidate will debate with all the others, because the party-itself will pay the expenses.
That is not to say that media should not have to front some of the costs. Politics is news.

Air time for a debate is prime time for advertising. Therefore, media should be mandated to fund telecasts to some extent.

WHAT? Just the latest from a girl from Queens.

Explanation of terms above:
************KIOSK?
Kiosks are interactive computer's that interlock information for delivery.

Kiosks: Kiosks need to be developed thus:
Vital Records data is the starting point. Otherwise there is alien registration &C.

Once one’s identity is established, via print record from Vital Records then Interface the Vital Records, birth data, with history or “Tax Status” regarding last income, to indicate eligibility with immediate needs: food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare and Housing, Job training and Personal Development.

Immediate “Status for emergency housing would entirely on the basis of need; it would consist of”: Social Security Number, Birth/Citizenship proofs. In flux you would identify if the individual is entitled to SSD/SSI I&C.

Job search could begin immediately, The Department of Labor’s database should be open to the public via Kiosk. One could walk into HRA and query what jobs are available for their profession and then Obtain a print out of jobs available in last field of employment.

Immediate Priority referral for job training and placement.

A Kiosk would function as a catch all, it would deliver the necessary documentation, Availability and resources necessary to assist one and rescue one immediately from homelessness.

Ancillary plans need to be made if psychiatric evaluation, chemical detox or domestic violence are present. Work would be an immediate goal; domestic assistance housing and Preparation may be necessary too.

Essentially a working Kiosk would:
Data entry and computer interfaces are necessary between: HRA, OMH, SS Admin and Department of Labor. Sharing of available information speeds delivery to services.

The Plan:

You would merge: Social Security eligibility, work record and jobs available in that field.

This would be between HRA & Department of Labor’s Database, as well as Social Security, Department of Taxation and finance &C...

You would document: Social Security Administration’s data on eligibility status.
Essentially:
Your Social Security Number would interact with Department of Labor’s records on you. It would impart data, such as whether one is eligible for Social Security/SSI, Medicaid, Medicare and the like.

Your birth data is required. A new driver’s license temporary card could be issued at once. It takes too long under our current system to save people from the streets.

These elements would allow anyone, clinician or lay-person the opportunity to help people change, improve or begin life a-new.

The concepts here are applicable to anyone who wants to be in a better place. The goals belong to each individual and are self-determined for community inclusion. In fact, the plan, once honed by rehabilitation of the homeless, needy and or chemically dependent, is intended to be extended to all Americans – one at a time.

Thank you! For reading thus far. I hope to hear from you soon. Be happy, healthy and well.

SECOND ARTICLE OF THREE SAMPLES REQUESTED
(PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ONLINE).
This is a sample poem from my vast collection:
AT LAST -

Before noon, in times of gloom, tell me we are not to doom! Behind a shadow I saw you hiding, and came to you with many a good tiding, but under the moon, did I hold you too soon? At last long listening lasses are not making assess of themselves while having their say on the condition of their day. So do you laugh in the face of fate with your eyes of stone? Tell me, can you come out and play? There's so much more to behold. Don't be held back. Admit what you are and what you lack. Love, laughter and listening make perfection of affection, and bring joy and faith! These are the ingredients for friendship, a firmament, a foundation, a merriment while being our strength against discontent. Kill the rodent, pat the baby, for soon and once you're an old lady. Put simply: live to love and love to live; learn to forgive.

THE THIRD ARTICLE OF THREE SAMPLES REQUESTED
(PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ONLINE).

ON EDUCATION - written circa 1997.

The strongest are the weakest. The weakest are the strongest.

A life based on a lie is based on no one really knowing you; you've “stolen” all you have, and in the end, no matter how many are around you, you are all alone.

To really live, the truth is your only real friend. People come and go. All that we have will be left behind, and all we truly have are our integrity and a pure heart which we should wear like armour and guard at all costs.

To be strong, you must surrender; leaving what you know you cannot do unto others who do; leave what other's do best to them; that being a thing they do well. Let them do what they do best; you just concern yourself with your part.

To be weak, you only blame and harass others until you get what you want. The irony is what you must really want is some gift and not armistice. Control is to resist what will ultimately due you harm; it is by no means oppression to give in; in fact, most rules are meant to protect those who fail to see possible consequences of their actions.

“PERSONAL POWER” is something we never surrender, concede, abandon or destroy.. Power is the light within that cannot be extinguished until we close our eyes for the last time and the light fades. Our goals are just some occupation of our time here together, I think; freedom drives people to wage war; this we know; freedom itself, stops just short of annihilating our beings, to the point that suffering of every human being is at stake.
This is because man sees competition and possession as of value when they are not. The only things of value are community, faith, sustenance, compassion and progress.

There are, as you know, those who feel that chaos is best for the balance of power and that somehow mankind is at his best when he competes in this way; they seem to view it that way that if one stays in contact with the primordial man, (“The Carib,”) he is best actualized. We would ultimately balance the aggression, within. This is the lie? This is a disease itself. Ask: Why would progress and longevity, peace, and kindness toward one another cause an unmanageable imbalance? Have we NO problem solving skills???

They say people born today will live easily to age one hundred, average. If this turns out to be true, there would be a great untapped potential and new advantages to this for society: For a change, experience and wisdom would be valued; The knowledge and life experience would not continually die off, settle in and wander away disgusted; If only it were utilized and appreciated at the very least.
In other words, I don't think that older folks should be carted off to homes and nursing facilities unless it is necessary for their survival. These are not meant to be warehouses for humans. In many cases, where they may no longer be capable and fit physically, they are otherwise quite alive, and willing, and useful, and unfortunately they are largely unappreciated.
Don't talk to me about overcrowding earth...let's go live on a space station, OK? (Stop that).

Ask: Wouldn't a 75 yr. old businesswoman make a better HR director than a 45 yr old fresh out of college - just from being a producer in youth alone, now savvy, having had “been there,” “done that too” and 'seen you before'" Their experience is vital in this way. Do you understand that kind of thing? Ok. Ok. Ok.
Let's complicate things a little....let's say you've got Alzheimer's disease and “aren't there” all the time. There are still things you could do with your time, much better than bingo, soaps, and being a spectator to entertainment and social activities. (I know every effort is made for productive time, but we could, and I think we should, do better).

I submit that in such circumstances one's/your mind may also be deteriorating because you have no meaningful productive activities. Like what? Crocheting, packing fresh fruit, arranging floral and gift baskets, or learning a new trade, like working a loom, to name a few things. Industry is not the goal, being industrious is living.

(This blog is finally being written because I am unemployed, disabled and waiting for the "OK" to go back to work! These notes were written 9 years ago, but never published until now. Who has the time? If you think you have time, you're not busy "if you want something done," I was once told, "ask a busy person..."

I'm no doctor, I hold no degrees and these are just novice observations, but see if you agree with me, ok? One of my opinions is that the period of intellectual vibrancy, expectation, development and continuum is only limited by outdated standards where people lived to be 55, got very little, if any, education, and were living in and economy that was booming for The West and few others. With all this said, I will not just make criticisms and quips and leave you in the lurch, I suggest:

A psychosocial assessment for every child entering pre-K, Academic assessment of all K students at the end of 1st semester; no "social promotions" at any time; I understand this is now no longer the case, THANK GOD!

At middle school career assessment testing/personality-career counseling could each contribute to a good plan for The future.
I propose an 8 hour school day. Students would have 5 hours of classes, a second lunch break, and two hours of study and assistance by Educational student volunteers; teachers or aides who need the experience would be learning their craft “hands on.”An attractive point is that The school day can occur anytime; those who have these assignments could greatly accommodate themselves; schedules can be productive in flux.
Aides and interns can do what they do best: teach. They would function as teacher's assistants while in training and school themselves. The Individual needs of each student are met this way.
As a consequence, all of our lives are to become better, because the academic needs, as described here would be taylor made to each unique student; these assessments and academic concentrations can and will be realized with effort and contribution from the academic community, students and families. We need to accommodate The Student. We need to improve The delivery of education at no additional cost.
This is how it could be done.....
Provide The framework, network and team between students, parents and teachers; accommodate teachers they are very important people for our children and society. This was the only way everyone could stand and "stand" learning and teaching in some ways; and this way prevents what I'm naming: "Chaotic Academic Disease." Everyone must sacrifice, because, "with privilege comes responsibility," so only one month summer vacation, not two, is my recommendation. Why?

Two months off throws the student out of the structural equilibrium, the learning regimen, and it "throwing in the towel" on the student who is missing the opportunity to really improve; poorly performing students shouldn't "catch up," they should end up ahead, because they've been in school ALLL YEARRR LONNNNGGa!!!!!! (I believe this is why some children never catch up).

One Basic Precept: It is at no time acceptable for a child to "underachieve." If you have a weakness, I.E. Math and Science, then, those are your focus study areas which you must tutor with, not ignore because you pass. Passing is drifting and doing well is cruising...a report that is otherwise good with A+, A- B+ shows ability, but some barrier to success. The goal of education is ":action not knowledge," so let's not act like, "Ok, she'll be Ok.." We, ourselves have our education, however excellent, however lacking in and of itself, for these same reason(s).

In my private High School we had classes with a different schedule for each day of the week, lettered a - h; (“A” Day Schedule &C), in other words, you had a different schedule each “letter day” which gave students who are known to learn better at different times, those who need frequent breaks or study periods, individually customized-child provisions accordingly to their particular academic/business needs and goals.

For public institutions, with larger populations and greater cultural/ethic diversity by mere numbers of students, the school is used a little differently; only a few changes are made to accommodate everyone. The first thing is because of the number of students, the school has to be used virtually 8-10 hours a day - classes running, tutorials, breaks and activities; overcrowded classes serve few and confuse and frustrate the rest of us. If the school is open this many hours, teachers and providers can work when they want to, but more importantly, maybe a fledgling math student will do much better if some days they have Am math and others Pm math, and on still others they have it mid-day &C...

My (uniformed) "opinion" as a disabled person myself, says that special education stigmatizes and impedes learning; if someone is "close" don't put him on a "special kids bus" and send him off to ignore the world. Integrate special ed into the mainstream school; largely it is, I believe, but often these children have other abilities that allow them to excel at other things; this is not true all the time, but I do know it happens often enough....
This is where assessment and career development should be crucially evaluated and implemented. Just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they can't be an artist, writer, inventor, carpenter or nurse. (Don't tell me 'no.') Their family, teachers and friends - they need to get these students on the track to just learning what everyone else learns; maybe they need to learn to enhance whatever they are just "good at" and do the best they can with the rest. The key is always for everyone a fun class is where the learning lasts.

Special ed should be just as main stream as wheel chair disabled children are. Criminal behavior children should be handled very quickly, immediately and decisively as possible. Be tough, this is their future and our school. The goals, the classrooms, the programs and the diplomas can be, and should probably not be different marks of achievement, but otherwise, we are limiting their world; we are limiting who they know, how far they'll go, and where they go in life; most importantly we would be limiting their psychosocial development by stigmatizing them in anyway. I suggest that some well meaning as they are do not see that it is also possible that all this, stigma is impeding their ability to be best educated. Discipline, not fear, makes the best classroom(s).

“Problem children” who commit crimes and carry weapons in school should go for psychological counseling, and they should be required as part of their rehab to meet people in prison, or people on death row, for an extreme example; this may impart some advice and experience; by having troubled students listen to how the end began for prisoners, the hope is that maybe these sad stories wont be replicated; such involvement can improve their (the youngster's) hopes and their development of resolve can benefit such populations mutually.
They should have to listen to first hand accounts of prisoners in Federal and State prisons who've given away their youth for money, drugs and popularity; you don't need to make special schools for them either. Simply for their rehab period make them go to school with the students at the State and Federal Prisons. They'll learn they don't want to be there; I recommend at least for that time they don't belong going to school with the kids who come to learn. We thus protect those who come to school for the right reasons. Early intervention can save an at-risk student.
